The “France in Indo-Pacific Fact Sheet” lists France’s territory and defence projects while outlining its strategic objectives and presence in the Indo-Pacific zone. Key French-controlled islands include Réunion and Mayotte in the Indian Ocean and New Caledonia, French Polynesia, and Wallis and Futuna in the Pacific. These islands were taken over by France in the course of colonization, primarily between the 18th and 19th centuries. These islands are strategically important because of their locations, which gives France an opportunity to maintain a significant military presence in the Indo-Pacific region. France’s presence in the Indo-Pacific benefits India and the other QUAD countries (the United States, Japan, and Australia) by contributing to a regional balance of strength and deterring prospective threats.
